Bert K. Lopansri, MD, D(ABMM), FIDSA is an Infectious Diseases physician and clinical microbiologist who is board certified by the ABIM and ABMM, respectively. He received his medical degree at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine where he also completed his Internal Medicine Residency. He completed an Infectious Diseases fellowship at the University of Utah after which he joined the Internal Medicine faculty to conduct NIH-sponsored research investigating the pathophysiology of cerebral malaria. For the past 12 years, he has led the Intermountain Health Central microbiology and molecular labs and system-wide best practices team as medical director and directs the Intermountain Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology lab. Dr. Lopansri previously led the Intermountain Infectious Diseases clinical and academic programs serving as medical director and section chief, respectively. In addition to his lab leadership roles, he currently maintains a part-time clinical practice at Intermountain Medical Center where teaches and mentors medical students, residents, and ID Fellows. His current research interests center on healthcare associated infections, infections in patients with hematologic malignancy, Clostridium difficile infection, emerging diagnostic tests, and the impact clinical microbiology has on clinical outcomes and healthcare costs. He is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine (Clinical) at the University of Utah School of Medicine.
