Description: For many years, bioinformatics has become an increasingly important part of clinical molecular diagnostic testing. However, many bioinformaticians receive their first clinical laboratory experience during employment. Conversely, laboratory directors must create both position descriptions and identify relevant training needed to help them transition into a highly regulated patient care environment. The role of a clinical bioinformatician can look very different across laboratories based on group size, skill sets, and organization needs. Join members of an AMP Working Group to discuss upcoming AMP guidance that seeks to clarify the roles, skill sets and provide resources for the clinical bioinformaticians working in a CLIA-certified clinical molecular laboratory environment.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify current challenges for clinical laboratories in defining the role of the clinical bioinformatician.
2. Discuss upcoming AMP guidance providing a body of knowledge for clinical bioinformaticians working in a CLIA-certified clinical molecular genetics laboratory environment.
